Do Something Positive

Every sexually active teen and college age student is potentially at great risk for unintended STDs and HIV transmission.  As cultural mores change in the U.S. and internationally, Dr. John says, "Adults need to wake up to what's really going on.  Do you really think the young people you know are invincible to a viral danger and invulnerable to HIV?  Well, think again - and do something positive about it with your ideas and connections on how to generate major money and in-kind support for TeenAIDS."

It is difficult for most adults to understand the pressures of growing up in a world where a silent killer lurks in the shadows of young love.  Yet, today's youth are faced with this challenge from HIV/AIDS - and they need to get the medically accurate facts to know how to avoid HIV and protect their bodies from unnecessary diseases.

But how is that going to happen if adults hold a Pollyannish point of view about the sexual and drug-related transmission of HIV?  I am amazed when I meet good parents who want nothing but the best for their children but don't think that their kids need to hear the medical facts.  One father told me, "My daughter is not going to have sex before marriage.  I'm not concerned.  If other young people do [it], that's their problem - not mine!"  Guess whose daughter got pregnant her Senior year of high school?  Yup, his daughter.  A few years ago, I met a girl in high school who had sex with her boyfriend after he convinced her that if they were both virgins, they couldn't get HIV.  Well, she did because he lied to her about his sexual history.

Look at these statistics: 50% of all new cases of HIV transmission in the world occurs in youth 15 to 24 years old (UNAIDS, Geneva).  A rapidly increasing teen HIV epidemic is occurring presently in the United States: 25% of new cases occur among 13 to 19 year olds (CDC, Atlanta).  Please, if you're a parent or a concerned adult realize that our young people are in harm's way as you read this.

I have forgone my annual salary since the inception of TeenAIDS in 1997, so that all available monies I raised could go to our education programs -- that we offer free to teens, schools and community groups.  However, I need major assistance now as we transition TeenAIDS from my series of Global Walks to a more aggressive internet campaign to educate youth.

The more time I spend raising money, is less time that I can spend doing what I do best - training teens to take responsibility to save themselves, their friends, and their generation from this avoidable virus.

I hope this Forum can generate some really good discussion about how adults can step up to the plate and help out.  I need to raise $175,000 this year, a modest amount.  However, unlike many charitable causes, I can pledge that the bulk of our money goes to helping teens live healthy lives free of HIV/AIDS.  But you've got to help.

Please use his Forum to think of ways we can get this kind of major support.  Your ideas cost you nothing.  Your input may save a life of a young person you know and love.
