Dr. Chittick received his doctorate (Ed.D.) from Harvard University in June, 1994 from HGSE Dean Jerry Murphy. They were friends from meetings during John's days as President of the Student Association Cabinet. Dr. Chittick also received a Masters (Ed.M.) from Harvard in 1988. His ground-breaking thesis Adolescents and AIDS: The Third Wave investigated school prevention programs and predicted the current teen HIV/AIDS pandemic.

After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Chittick lectured at Harvard's School of Public Health in Spring seminars on vulnerability issues of teens and women to AIDS.
