World AIDS Day Phone Interview with Derrick from Uganda

Volunteer of the Week for March 29th, 2007

Derrick Tebezinda Malitoli

On World AIDS Day, Dr. John interviewed Derrick from Uganda over the phone. They discussed what events Derrick and his TeenAIDS-affiliated group participated in.  You can listen to that interview below.

Uganda AIDS PeerCorps (UAPC) volunteers moved around in villages asking the questions about HIV&AIDS and Answering questions that came up from Infected people and also from those who were still green about the killer disease. we exchanged ideas with the people and at the end we guided them by sensitizing them how to abstain, how to treat the infected person, to go for the check up to know their status and those who said they can't abstain we advised and taught them to use a Condom.

We found out that many people still don't about HIV/AIDS and also we found out the number of people who are infected with the various is high...75% and is more in the youth and married people. The number of people who still don't know about AIDS and those who don't want to use Condoms is 50% and also many said that they fear to know their status that is...they have a feeling that when they get to know that they are infected they will die soon. we advised them by telling them that when u get to know what u are is good. we get to start on the treatment befor yr body becomes weak to fight the Disease. and we also told them that the more u stay with the disease minus knowing what u are u the more u infect others........and also we added and told them that we u find out the you are HIV positive it doesn't mean that u go ahead and have live sex, the more u have alive sex the more u are infecting yr self coz u may say that u are infecting others but when u are re..infecting yr self..

So in our knowledge as the PeerCorps Volunteers we came up with a saying that WE CAN'T LOOK AT THEM DIE. *WCLTD* we still have much to pass out to many people and save those who are not yet infected and also to avoid re..infection and also to sensitize those infected to live a happy life by providing counseling to them. We still visit our client to encourage them to take their medicine and also to eat in time. We have 20 Clients. The preginate mothers we advised them to go for the check up to save the baby. coz they didn't know that there can be a chance of giving birth to a baby who is not infected. so many welcomed it.

We end by thanking all those who volunteered on the WORLD AIDS DAY and please keep up that sprit and we save the rest and also we help those infected.

We also want to thank Dr. Charles Steinberg, Phi Delt Fraternity at Dartmouth College and of course, Dr. John and the staff at TeenAIDS.
