Hung Trieu was in Dr. John's first PeerCorps group beginning in his Sophomore year at Fitchburg High School. He was on the Tennis and Cross Country teams. In college, he married his childhood sweetheart, MyHanh. They now have a great son, James (Taylor), who is Dr. John's godson. With a young family to support, Hung began working part-time as Dr. John's executive assistant when TeenAIDS' office was composed of two computers. MyHanh is now a medical student at UMASS-Worcester. Dr. John owes a lot to Hung for his work especially when John was out of the country.
I have been working with Dr. John since 1998, my
sophomore year in high school (Fitchburg High School in Fitchburg,
Massachusetts). I was involved in the student PeerCorps group
as I enjoyed working and counseling my peers. I am now in
college taking many different course studies until I choose a major
.
My folks are Vietnamese and I have been in America for over
fourteen years. I was very excited to hear that Dr. John had
been to Vietnam and wanted to volunteer my time in helping his cause
to prevent HIV/AIDS. It was a great experience for me to work
with TeenAIDS-PeerCorps because it made me less shy about talking in
public -- especially about sex.
Currently, I have taken a year off from college and I am Dr.
John's executive assistant. I will be taking care of
many things in the office while Dr. John is on his Walk. I
have helped organize Dr. John's new walk and am assisting in the
recent remodeling of our new website with the help of Kyle Laughlin
and Noel Heaney from Sapient Corporation in Cambridge. On top
of that, I am married to my childhood sweetheart MyHanh, and I also
have a 2 1/2 year old son (James). MyHanh is also in college
studying pre-med. Dr. John is James' godfather.
During the summer time, I serve as assistant tennis pro at a
local country club (Oak Hill Country Club). We have seven clay
tennis courts and the pro and I remodel them yearly. But most
of my time is spent teaching kid's camp and playing matches with
members. In my spare time, I love to take James out because he
is also very athletic. He is a very quick learner and loves
"to play" tennis as well as other sports. On the weekends,
MyHanh, James and I head to the malls and do our shopping.
MyHanh shops, James runs around, and I go after him! Later, we
love to eat out then -- mostly sea food and Chinese.
I look forward to meeting all the different people that Dr. John
has met or will meet on his walks. So if you are interested in
talking to me, please e-mail me at htrieu@teenaids.org.
